'Empire' Star Denies Confirming Jussie Smollet Is Gay 'I Was Misquoted'

Smollett plays a gay character on the hit Fox series, so it's no surprise that fans wondered if he lives the lifestyle in real life. While Smollett has made it clear he does not want his sexuality to be the forefront of the show, it became hard for him to ignore speculation.

While speaking with Ellen DeGeneres, he shared his peace.

"It was really important to me to make sure that it got across that there is no closet. There's never been a closet. That I've been in. I don't own a closet, I got a dresser, but I don't have a closet, but I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home."

He clarified that he prefers not to speak on his "personal life" and added that it isn't an attempt to "hide or deny" who he truly is. While he still hasn't made it exactly clear what his orientation is, he said one special lady in his life is aware and that's all that matters.

"My mama knows. My mama likes me a lot. And yes I take her to the Sound of Music sing-along every, single year. So, any questions? But you know honestly, we're humans and we love and we do all that good stuff. So I'm honored for this opportunity and I'm honored to be here with you."
