As Queen Elizabeth approaches the throne on Reign, it sounds like she might not be quite as cunning as some may have expected.

Is Mary Going To Get Married Again On 'Reign?'

On Tuesday,Entertainment Weekly released a statement from executive producer Laurie McCarthy who said that this new character played by Rachel Skarsten will experience black and white emotions. Even though she'll be a strong-willed woman with mighty power, she'll also have her sensitive moments.

"I'm delighted to cast Rachel Skarsten as Elizabeth, a female monarch still in her twenties, early yet in her rule," McCarthy said. "She is a beautiful, cunning and brave mix of opposites: a young woman hardened too soon by life's events, but vulnerable when it comes to love. A mercenary foe riddled with compassion for her rival."

'Reign' Finds Its Queen Elizabeth

The producer added some more details on how Elizabeth's presence into the series will change the world.

"With her introduction, our world expands: the stakes grow even more heightened as we travel to another court filled with the beauty of privilege, passion and intrigue," McCarthy shared. "The wait is over. Elizabeth is here. And I'm certain our audience will welcome her into the fold."

McCarthy also revealed the reason why she's excited to finally add an iconic character like Queen Elizabeth into the royal drama.

"No single character understands Mary's unique circumstances more," the producer said. "No character is more of a threat to her happiness and her life."

Reign airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
