Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise Divorce Details & Reasons: Court Papers Show Marriage Had 'Broken Down Irretrievably'
The divorce settlement between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise was kept tightly under wraps when Holmes filed the papers earlier this year, but new documents have been uncovered that shed light on the break-up of one of Hollywood's hottest couples.
Though the split between Cruise, 50, and Holmes, 33, was largely perceived in the media to be a complete surprise, the relationship had actually been faltering for half a year before Holmes officially filed a divorce petition, according to documents obtained by The National Enquirer.

The papers stated that the "marital relationship" had "broken down irretrievably for a period of at least six months immediately preceding" the filing for divorce.
The documents, which were filed Aug. 17 of this year, also include details that have already surfaced regarding custody arrangements for the couple's 6-year-old daughter Suri - Holmes has sole custody and Cruise will pay $400,000 a year to fund Suri's "medical, dental, insurance, unreimbursed medical and dental, education, college, extracurricular and camp expenses."

Radar Online reported that Cruise's child support payments will total about $4.8 million by the time Suri reaches the age of 18.
Since the divorce, Holmes and Suri have left California and relocated to New York City. Holmes spoke about the intense media scrutiny she faced amid the separation during the 2012 Design Awards, which preceded New York Fashion Week earlier this month.
"I have a lot of feelings about the press," Holmes said with a smirk. "There are a lot of people with much bigger problems and who are less fortunate. I try to keep it all in perspective."
Cruise recently faced criticism that claimed that his religion, Scientology, was to blame for the actor not seeing his daughter in more than a month.
But Cruise's friend Bert Fields told People magazine that reports of Holmes keeping Suri away from Cruise because of Scientology are "hogwash," adding that the real reason the father and daughter hadn't been together is that Cruise is shooting a film in the U.K.
"This has absolutely nothing to do with Scientology," Fields said. "This is something that's been going on her whole life - when Tom is shooting a film out of the country, he has to rely on the telephone."
