'Insurgent' Producers Talk 'Divergent' Franchise
This is actually the same weekend that Divergent opened on last year.
Insurgent's predecessor took in $4.9 million during its Thursday night showings last year on March 20.
The site reported that Lionsgate is hoping that the franchise's star Shailene Woodley's higher profile will boost the sales this weekend along with the continued popularity of Veronica Roth's books, which the franchise is based on.
According to Variety, pre-release tracking reports suggest that Insurgent will surpass Divergent in box office sales. Divergent brought in $54.6 million during its debut and went on to total $150.9 million in the United States.

The international box office has already hit $8.2 million in markets that opened Wednesday and Thursday and Lionsgate stated the Divergent sequel is in first place in 49 of the 52 markets around the world where it has opened so far.
Insurgent's budget was roughly $110 million, but it has opted for 3D run as well as an Imax run, which Divergent did not do.
Divergent earned $138 million in the international markets, but experts also believe that sum will increase given Woodley's appeal and the increasing popularity of Roth's books overseas.
Insurgent is hitting 74 international markets this week at about 9,000 locations.
