After being sent to jail for leaking state secrets to WikiLeaks, Chelsea Manning has joined Twitter from behind bars.

The arm private has reported joined the social networking site as @xychelsea and began posting tweets on Friday afternoon.
Apparently, her conditions of custody state that she does not get Internet access so to go around the rules she will be dictating comments by phone that supporters will be posting on her behalf.

The Twitter account reportedly had more than 1,000 followers in a few hours, but now only one day later, the account has gained more than 38,000.
For her profile picture, Manning went with a drawing of her as she would like to be seen, with long hair. Apparently, the military authorities have consistently refused to allow her to grow out her hair.
Manning, who was actually born male, decided she wanted to transition after she was convicted. After months of legal struggle, she was approved for gender-reassignment hormone therapy.
She was arrested at the Forward Operating Base Hammer outside of Baghdad in Iraq where was working as an intelligence analyst.
Reportedly, the Chelsea Manning support team is encouraging people to follow to former soldier on Twitter through a #FF campaign. They are promising prospective followers that all posts on the account will be "her own candid thoughts and comments."
