During this episode called Collateral, viewers witnessed that Avery Markham (Sam Elliott) was sticking around Harlan despite the loss of his lover Katherine Hale (Mary Steenburgen) who was killed in the episode called Fugitive Number One.

Mary Steenburgen Discusses Her Time As Katherine On 'Justified'
"I think it's the money. He says that to Katherine when she's laying on the slab, that he'd love nothing more than to gut Wynn Duffy [Jere Burns], but right now it's, 'I'm going to get my goddamn money,'" Elliott shared.
"He's focused on that. Losing her was a big deal, but I don't think he's ready to cut his losses and get out of town. I'm not sure he's all that rational at this point in time. I think he loses his focus a bit on what the hell he's up to. It all comes crashing down, to a certain degree," the seasoned actor added.
Elliott dished that his character's love for Katherine is probably his biggest flaw, which is certainly attributing to his irrational thoughts and actions.
The actor also revealed how exhausted his character is from everything going down in Harlan.
"I think he definitely bit off more than he can chew," Elliott admitted since Markham had this vision that he'd buy all this land and wait for the legalization of marijuana.
"He might have had this background and grew up in Kentucky, but it sure wasn't in Harlan. I think he is exhausted; he's lost his soldiers; he's lost the woman he loves. He's lost control of the game, and he's lost his f------ money on top of it," Elliott stated.
Justified will air its final episode on April 14 on FX at 10 p.m. ET.
