Kevin Spacey, who plays Frank Underwood in House of Cards, believes the Netflix show actually assists people in understanding politics in ways they've never before.

In a recent interview with BBC the actor addressed a criticism the show has come under attack for: turning people against politics and voting.

"I think it's really making them understand politics in ways that they, perhaps, never had before," he said. Spacey added that he was aware that at the end of the day the series was meant to entertain as well, but yet they wanted to keep things real.

"Yes, we want to be entertaining and yes, we want to feel like it's an accurate depiction of the things and the processes that people go through," he said.

Finally he suggested that the morality of the characters was something he would leave for the viewers to judge:

"The choices that people make and the morals of it, I'll leave for others to judge, because I can't judge the characters I play - I just have to play them.."

Previously in an interview with Business Insider former Congressman Barney Frank gave his contrary opinion on House of Cards, and it was as scathing as it gets.

"Oh, it's a terrible show," he says. Frank went on to emphasize the disingenuity of the series, stating that no one should take it seriously. "It's the kind of thing that debases people's view of politics."

He proceeded to attack Kevin Spacey's character, Frank Underwood, on the show: "People say he is remotely realistic, who is he?" he asked. "He isn't anybody, there hasn't been anybody so morally loose."

Season 3 of House of Cards is available for streaming on Netflix.
