In last Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy, viewers and Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) suffered from shock and sadness with the departing of Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).

In case you missed it, Derek died in a hospital bed after being taken off of life-support with Meredith's consent since he wound up in a horrific car accident.
The sadness is bound to carry over into the remaining episodes of this current season as well as into the following twelfth season since grief takes time to deal with- especially when it's over a significant other's passing.

Pompeo finally spoke out about her onscreen lover leaving the series via Twitter Monday afternoon.
"Happy Monday!" she beamed before going into a detailed message to her followers.
"I have always said what keeps me going is the fans," she dished, adding, "Knowing we move you and inspire you."
The loss of Derek is a "tremendous loss" for her character and she mentioned how "many people" out in the world suffer such losses.
"Husbands and wives of soldiers, victims of senseless violence and parents who have lost children," she shared, before adding, "People who get up each day and do what feels impossible."
She said Meredith's story moving forward "is for these people."
"I am honored And excited to tell the story of how Meredith goes on in the face of what feels like the impossible," Pompeo revealed.
"I hope you will all join me on her journey," she concluded.
Grey's Anatomy airs Thursday nights on ABC.
