Dr. Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), or to some, McDreamy, pulled over to help some injured civilians after witnessing a tragic accident. As fate would have it, while pulling away from the accident in his car, Derek reached down to look for his ringing cell phone and a huge truck then struck him.
Since the episode aired, show creator Shonda Rhimes has received a lot of backlash and some fans are calling her a TV serial killer.

While it may not seem like it, Rhimes is also mourning the loss of Dempsey's character and she released a statement to praise the actor for his incredible performance over the last 10 years.
"Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character - for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our 'McDreamy.' Patrick Dempsey's performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example - happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true - of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey's Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless."
It was recently reported that some fans are so devastated by McDreamy's death that they have launched a petition to have Rhimes bring Derek back from the dead.
As of now, over 80,000 fans have signed the petition and only 60,000 more signatures are needed to reach their goal.
Grey's Anatomy airs every Thursday night at 8 p.m. on ABC.
