On Friday, Courant reported that the former Patriots tight end had smoked marijuana after football games and during the off-season and it was revealed while he was on trial.
But despite his "rampant drug use," Hernandez was never disciplined by the league.

The 25-year-old played in the NFL for three years and reportedly never failed numerous drug tests despite the recent revelation.
The now convicted killer was an important part of the Patriot team before he was arrested for the death of the boyfriend of his fiancee's sister, Odin Llyod.
One witness, Alexander Bradley, testified that Hernandez was a "chain-smoker" and would smoke "up to an ounce" of marijuana on a daily basis.
A teammate of Hernandez said that some players would "roll the dice" when it came to NFL marijuana testing since a first-time offense isn't any more than a slap on the wrist.
A more lenient marijuana policy was put in place last fall by the NFL and players association. The threshold for a positive marijuana test was nearly doubled to be consistent with the Olympic threshold.
