Ronan the Accuser is no more, but that doesn't mean Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his galactic team will have an easy time in the 2017 sequel. There are some baddies Quill will never face, however.
Not all of Marvel's villains are allowed to appear in Marvel Studio films - think of the hoops The Avengers: Age of Ultron had to jump through to sever Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch's connection to the X-Men - and a few of these are known for their involvement in the Guardians story line.
Two of these are the Shi'ar Empire and Kang the Conqueror.
"Shi'ar and Kang are both owned by Fox," writer/director James Gunn informed fans on Thursday, adding that "all decisions about who is in GotG2 were made a long time ago."
This rights issue exists because of Kang and the Shi'ar Empire's existence within the X-Men storyline.
