Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development & Worldwide Production for Warner Bros., which is producing Batman v Superman, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the movie's darkness.
While some have criticized the entire DC movie lineup for being too dark and not fun enough, Silverman said that there was a purpose to it.

"There is intensity and a seriousness of purpose to some of these characters," Silverman explained. "The filmmakers who are tackling these properties are making great movies about superheroes; they aren't making superhero movies. And when you are trying to make a good movie, you tackle interesting philosophies and character development. There's also humor, which is an important part."
The teaser trailer for Batman v Superman weighed heavily on the philosophical implications of being a superhero and was very muted with a gray color. This is in stark contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is often very colorful and light.
The darker element was developed with The Dark Knight trilogy of films, directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Silverman and company. The Dark Knight in particular went on to gross over $1 billion at the box office and was one of the best reviewed movies of 2008.
It is not known if the film will have any overtly humorous moments, though Silverman's explanation seems to suggest that the film won't be entirely self-serious.
Now, DC is beginning a Cinematic Universe full of superheroes, including Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and more. These three will all be present in Batman v Superman.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled for release in theaters on March 25, 2016.
