Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) appeared to have cheated on his wife Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) with his research fellow while he was working in Washington, D.C. Then he of course suffered from a tragic death after he and Meredith mended their relationship.

Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) also had ups and downs with their relationship throughout Season 11.
Another pair that were once together, but ended their relationship was Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). They were in a weird in-between stage since they became ex-wives.
Capshaw recently spilled to TVLine that Arizona and Callie are heading towards "peaceful coexistence" in Season 12.
One of the drafts for the Season 11 finale actually showed "there was definite forward movement happening for Arizona, but it didn't quite fit" into the bigger picture, according to Capshaw.
Capshaw revealed her character and Callie are "moving toward a place where they can actually broach subjects that are tough for ex-wives."
Does this mean Arizona will find new love in Season 12? Well, it's totally possible.
"Big things will happen for her," Capshaw said.
Grey's Anatomy will return to ABC for its twelfth season.
