Nesquik Recall: Nestle Removes Products, Salmonella Risk

Nestlé USA announced a voluntary recall of limited quantities of their Nestlé Nesquick Chocolate Powder.

The recall of containers of Nesquick Chocolate Powder was announced on the company's website. Nestle, one of America's leading chocolate companies, has ordered the recall due to fears that the product may be tainted with salmonella. The recalled chocolate milk comes in 10.9-ounce, 21.8-ounce and 40.7-ounce containers. Containers in other sizes and flavors of the popular brand were not affected.

According to a report, Nestle USA recalled over 200,000 containers of Nesquick Chocolate Powder. One their main ingredient suppliers, Omaya, recalled batches of 50-pound, 2,000-pound and 2,500-pound of the ingredient calcium carbonate. The batches of the potentially harming ingredient were produced at Omaya's company plant in Superior, Ariz.

Calcium carbonate is an ingredient that acts as an anti-caking agent that also provides a source of calcium. So far, no signs of illness have been reported as a result of either Omaya or Nestle products. Nestle's press release advised customers to refer to cans that are marked "best if used by October 2014" and those with advertisements for the new movie "Wreck-It Ralph" or the motto "Be a Hero."

The most common symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. They usually start to show anywhere from eight to 72 hours of eating or drinking contaminated food and usually last four to seven days. While treatment is typically not required, it can have severe consequences and be life-threatening for infants, seniors, pregnant women and people with a weak immune system. Anyone experiencing these symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.

Customers who believe they may have purchased the potentially tainted mix should return it for a refund, according to the website. They can also check the UPC Code on containers they have already purchased or call Nestle consumer services at (800) 628-7679.
