American audiences won't get the option of watching Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 in 3D.

Forbes reports that the producers of the movie have scrapped the plan of releasing it in 3D in the United States. This might come as a bit of a disappointment to fans, as Lions Gate Entertainment had initially announced its plans to also offer the movie in IMAX 3D.

In February, Variety reported that the movie would be the first in the franchise to be released in that format. Although Part 1 did not screen in 3-D when it was released in other countries, its 3-D version hit theaters in China. Director Francis Lawrence was excited about the news.

"I'm thrilled 'Mockingjay - Part 2' will be in Imax theaters," Lawrence told Variety. "Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting; we recently saw the 3-D version of 'Mockingjay - Part 1' before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic."

Deadline had reported the movie's billings, and said the movie might be up for comparisons with Catching Fire, which didn't fare as well because its release was timed around Gravity.

The special 3-D version of the movie was also released for the Chinese market, which might have been an added incentive for viewers.

But now the studio is suggesting that they want to maintain consistency -- as the first three movies were released in 2-D -- which is why they are withdrawing the movie from 3-D release.

The movie will hit theaters on Nov. 20.
