Jeff Gordon Fight with Clint Bowyer on NASCAR Race Track, Cars Wrecked (WATCH VIDEO)
It was a crew vs. crew brawl as Jeff Gordon got into a fight with Clint Bowyer on the race track Sunday. The championship race at Phoenix International Raceway heated up as the two racers went at each other. According to FOX News, Bowyer made a WWE-like dash through the pits and garage to find Gordon.
"There's a lot of tension out there when you're running for points in the championship and things like that happen," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition.
"We'll continue to talk to the drivers and get them to work it out," Pemberton said. "That was surely a shame."
With only seven laps left, the fireworks began when Bowyer made contact with Gordon, which sent him straight to the wall and Gordon's No. 24 car was black-flagged. But instead of leaving the track, Gordon waited for Bowyer for his chance to get back at him.
Gordon slowed down until Bowyer came back around and slid down the track when Bowyer tried to get around him on the apron between turns 1 and 2. This action of Gordon's wrecked both cars, along with Joey Logano's No.20.
"Things just escalated over the year and I'd just had it," Gordon said.
"Clint has run into me numerous times, wrecked me and he got into me on the back straightaway and pretty much ruined our day," Gordon explained. "I've had it, fed up with it and got him back."
The tension was not over, as it was just getting started. After Gordon's actions on the track, he headed towards his hauler after parking his car when Bowyer's entire team marched towards him.
One of Bowyer's crew members grabbed Gordon from behind, and immediately, his team ran over to protect him.
Members from each team began pushing and shoving each other, as some of them even ended up on the ground brawling.
Security on the scene broke up the fight as both teams went their separate ways.
"It makes us all look like a bunch of retards," Bowyer said.
"It's pretty embarrassing," Bowyer went on. "For a four-time champion and what I consider one of the best this sports ever seen to act like this is pretty ridiculous."
Bowyer was even more upset because he had six more laps to go. This action of Gordon dropped him down to 28th in the race and fourth in the standings.
Michael Waltrip, co-owner of Bowyer's No. 15 Toyota, said Boyer didn't do anything wrong.
"Cowardly, chicken, unbelievable that a champion, a guy that's raced for championships would get in a fight for a championship," Waltrip said.
"Clint didn't do anything wrong, they rubbed on the back straightaway," Waltrip continued. "I guess if that constitutes slowing down and purposely waiting for a guy trying to win a championship then how am I suppose to know what's to be expected around here."
Gordon and Bowyer, along with their crew chiefs, met with NASCAR officials after the race. Sheriff's deputies guarded the door. Pemberton agreed to look forward into the incident before making any final decisions.
