Kim Kardashian Is 'Handcuffed' To Kris Humphries, Lawyer Says
The divorce proceedings between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries are still stalled more than a year after Kardashian filed for the separation, leading her lawyer to tell a judge that the reality star is unable to move forward with her life.
Kardashian's divorce attorney Laura Wasser said in court Thursday that her client wants to move on from the 72-day marriage with Humphries, but that has become impossible as the basketball player and his legal team are still not ready to move forward with a trial, according to a report from USA Today.
"Ms. Kardashian is now handcuffed to Mr. Humphries," Wasser told Superior Court Judge Stephen Moloney.
Wasser argued that because the union between Kardashian and Humphries was so short and because the couple had a prenuptial agreement, there is no reason the divorce should not be final by this time.
"I don't think his client has a fraud case," Wasser said regarding Humphries' attorney. "I think there's a fishing expedition going on here."
Humphries' lawyer Marshall Waller said he understands the frustration, but he and his client are unwilling to move forward with the case until they have collected all the evidence they need.
"I do understand the desire to get this case moved," Waller said. "There's nothing in particular about this case that makes it more important than anybody else."
Earlier reports have claimed that Humphries hopes to prove the marriage was a fraud meant to boost ratings on the E! reality show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," and he is seeking an annulment on those grounds.
A report from Hollywood Life says there are two reasons behind the delay. First, Kim and her mother Kris Jenner have been too busy with their many business commitments to devote much time to working on the divorce case. And second, Kardashian is hoping that if enough time goes by, Humphries will accept a private settlement instead of fighting it out in public courts.
"Unfortunately for Kim, there has been no movement with regard to her divorce. Everything has just been stalled because Kim and Kris [Jenner] are too busy with their hectic lifestyles to deal with this whole mess," a source said. "They have been postponing the inevitable, which is to let Kris have his way and say the marriage was fraudulent. I think Kris [Jenner] is just hoping that if they stall long enough, Kris will just accept a settlement outside of the courts."
