Fugees Rapper Sues: Pras Michel Reclaims Documentary 'Paper Dreams' from Director Marshall Tyler [PHOTO]
Pras Michel, a member of the hip-hop group The Fugees, is suing film director Marshall Tyler who directed his 2009 documentary "Paper Dreams:a Tale of Two Piracies" for failing to hand over the film to him.
According to TMZ, Pras' lawsuit asks for Tyler to return the footage to him or hand back the $70,000 he invested to film the documentary and to cover travel expenses.
Tyler however claims he owns the movie. "Pras is trying to assert ownership on material that Marshall owns the copyright to," his representative told TMZ.
The documentary is about the supposedly real-life story of Michel being seized by Somali pirates off the East African coast, according to TMZ. However, a biography for Tyler posted on the Internet Movie Data Base, says the movie is just about the pirates in Somalia.
According to TMZ, while Michel says in the movie that he was taken captive by pirates, he and the film crew, "merely witnessed" the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama in 2009.
The hijacking of the Maersk Alabama made headlines all over the United States because it reportedly was the first successful pirate seizure of an American ship since the 1800s. It ended when U.S. troops re-captured the ship.
Tyler learned the tools of his trade first in the world of music videos and then on the film sets of Hollywood. In 2007, he shot his first documentary Skid Row which follows Pras Michel from the Fugees's living as a homeless man on the streets of downtown LA's skid row, the nation's largest, for nine straight days. His documentary work Papaer Dreams: A Tale of Two Piracies, about the pirates in Somalia, has lead to his next challenge as a narrative feature director.
This was not the first time that Tyler and Michel worked together for a film. In 2007, Tyler shot his first documentary "Skid Row," which follows Michel living as a homeless man on the streets of downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row.
