New audio of beloved comedian Chris Farley as the voice of Shrek has been unearthed.

Is 'Pixels' Adam Sandler's Most Hated Movie Yet?

The audio of Farley doing voiceover work as Shrek, main character of the 2001 animated film of the same name, has gone viral this week. The audio clip is synched up to early storyboard footage from 1997, when Farley had originally been cast as the main character.

Farley used his own Wisconsin-born voice to play the character. The clip centers on the scene where Shrek and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) are bonding, with Shrek talking about his background and his motivation for delivering Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) to Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow).

Jena Malone's Mystery 'Batman v Superman' Role Finally Revealed

Farley's voiceover work is a far cry from the eventual Shrek Mike Myers, who gave the character a thick Scottish accent.

Farley died in 1997 before he could finish recording all the dialogue, so the part eventually went to Myers. Farley died of a drug overdose at the age of 33.

While Farley's take on Shrek is very different from Myers' approach, it would have been fascinating to watch the eventual film with Farley's voice dubbed in to see how the overall feeling would change. He seemed to imbue Shrek with a more gentle and sensitive quality as opposed to Myers' more outrageous take on the role.

We will never know if Farley's Shrek would have launched such a massive franchise as Myers did (four movies, a spinoff movie, a Broadway musical, merchandise, etc.), but Farley fans will surely be fascinated by what could have been.
