A monkey dressed in a coat was spotted at an IKEA store car park in Toronto on Sunday. The monkey reportedly escaped from its owner and made his way outside where he got lost.

The 7-month-old monkey was stylish as can be - wearing what appeared to be a shearling coat.

The monkey did not actually enter the IKEA shop, but instead stayed at the parking lot as onlookers gathered to take a look at the unusual sight. Control officers arrived and news about the 'IKEA Monkey' spread until the owner turned up.

The owner said the monkey managed to escape from its cage in the vehicle.

According to The Telegraph, the owner signed the rhesus macaque monkey over to the Toronto Animal Services and faces a charge of having a prohibited animal. According to CBC News, it is illegal to own an exotic animal in Toronto.

The wandering monkey is now in the care of the agency and reportedly in good health.

The news of the IKEA monkey started trending on Twitter soon after with the hashtag #Ikeamonkey.

IKEA shopper Bronwyn Page said, "There was a group of people around and a little thing on the ground.. at first I didn't know what kind of animal it was or what it was and I was like 'oh my gosh, that's a monkey.'

"It was just running around screaming," she continued. "There was a crowd of us around it and it seemed really scared and agitated....This is SO bizarre. Why is there a monkey at IKEA?"
