"At this time we do not understand the motive of this attack except to say no apparent relationship between suspect and victims," Roberts said at a news conference, as reported by ABC News.
The sheriff added: "I believe, at least from the information that's been provided to me at this point in time, it really was a killing of total strangers. To my knowledge at this point in time he was really trying, I think, to kill as many people as possible."
A teenage victim, Yevgeni Shvechenko, survived the incident and is in a stable condition. Her name was released by the Oregon Health & Science University Hospital on authorization of her family.
A Facebook update regarding the girl's condition has been posted by the family stating: "As of now she is stable and sleeping. the bullet went trough bruising her lung, it missed any vital organs and it missed her ribs. she will need 2 more operations. we appreciate any and all support including your prayers! thank you."
Roberts did not have a criminal background, according to the MSN.
The gunman opened fire in the crowded mall sending thousands of shoppers panicking.
Police recovered a rifle, multiple shell casings and a white hockey mask matching the one witnesses said was worn by the shooter.
