Tragedy struck an elementary school in Connecticut Friday morning when a gunman opened fire killing several children and staff.
The suspect's name is Ryan Lanza, according to CNN reports.
Lt. Paul Vance of the state police gave a few brief details during the first news conference on the incident.
One of the suspected shooters was a 24-year old wearing a bullet-proof vest, according to Reuters.
A gunman walked into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and started shooting. The incident ended with the suspected gunman shooting himself to death, according to Yahoo News.
Multiple deaths have been reported involving students and staff but a total number has yet to be confirmed as police continue to investigate the scene. Around 27 people are dead in the second worst school shooting in the history of the United States that includes 18 children fatally shot, according to the Washington Post.
According to reports, the gunman entered the elementary school in the morning armed with assault rifles. Police stated that emergency services were called around 9:40 a.m. when a gunman was in Sandy Hook's main office building.
A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said that a teacher had "numerous gunshot wounds" from being shot in the foot. The teacher was later taken to the local Danbury Hospital, according to Fox News.
One of the students at the school told local NBC reporters: "I was in the gym and I heard a loud, like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled. And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all ... started crying. All the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us. So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside. So we did and we came in the firehouse and waited for our parents."
Investigators continue to look into the motives behind the heinous crime.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama was informed of the shooting at 10:30 a.m. ET. by homeland security adviser John Brennan.
The entire Newtown School District was locked down on high alert as a precaution for student and staff safety. The elementary school has around 700 students in attendance.
Newtown is in Fairfield County which is around 60 miles northeast of New York City.
