It's officially been 14 years since the United States dealt with the deadliest terrorist attack to ever occur on its soil, but September 11th is still a fresh wound for a country still finding a way to heal.

The attacks on September 11, 2001 saw 2,606 people lose their lives in New York after two planes hijacked from Boston Logan airport crashed into the North and South World Trade Center towers. Two other planes also crashed in a field in Pennsylvania and The Pentagon in Washington D.C., killing an additional 371 people. In New York, the hijacked planes crashed into the towers at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m.. The towers later crumbled and fell completely at 9:59 and 10:28 a.m. A third tower, tower seven, later fell and crumbled in the afternoon.

Now, 14 years later, the site for the former towers has been rebuilt with a new building known as the Freedom Tower, and is the site of a memorial plaza and museum dedicated to the victims of the attacks. And each year, on the anniversary of the attacks, the family members of the survivors all gather for a moving ceremony remembering those whose lives were lost on that fateful day.
