Miss America 2016: 4 Biggest Moments From The Pageant Including Vanessa Williams Apology & More [VIDEO]
The annual Miss America pageant has come and gone once again, and the ceremony which saw Miss Georgia eventually win the crown certainly was certainly full of water cooler moments.
The event, which was on Sunday, Sept. 13 of course wound up belonging to Betty Cantrell, the eventual winner, but one moment in particular involving 1984 winner Vanessa Williams was one of the most talked about moments of the night as well.
Here are the top 4 moments from the annual event:
Vanessa Williams Gets An Apology
The actress was the first African-American woman who won the crown in 1984, but was forced to resign less than a year later after nude photographs of her surfaced in Penthouse magazine, ones she said at the time she had never consented to having published. However, during the night, which marked her first return to the event as a celebrity judge, executive chairman Sam Haskell took to the stage to give Williams a long-awaited apology.
"On behalf of today's organization, I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less the Miss America you are, and Miss America you always will be," he said.
Miss Georgia Wows With Her Talent
All contestants who show off what they're truly able to do during the talent portion usually find ways to wow-but the eventual winner truly stunned when she trumped everyone else during the talent portion with her dramatic rendition of Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio.
The Lead Up To The Crowning
Before Cantrell officially took the crown, the audience was treated to a walk down memory lane of Kira Kasantsev's reign as Miss America over the last year-starting from the moment she was given the title (marking the third contestant from New York in a row who had done so), and looked back at the things she accomplished during the reign.
Betty Cantrell Officially Being Crowned The Winner
Of course the moment a new woman wins the crown s always a top moment. Cantrell won the title over the eventual runners-up: 1st runner-up Miss Mississippi, Hannah Roberts, 2nd runner-up Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, 3rd runner-up Miss Louisiana, April Nelson, and 4th runner-up Miss Alabama, Meg McGuffin.
