A man who killed two firemen on Christmas Eve left a chilling note that was found at his Webster, NY, residence, police said Tuesday.

Authorities discovered the note written by William Spengler before he went on a rampage with an assault rifle.

"I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people," he wrote in his two- to three-page typewritten note.

The 62-year-old supposedly started the fire at his residence on Christmas Eve that emergency services then responded to. Spengler shot two of the volunteer firefighters who were attempting to put out the fire. The gunman used a Bushmaster .223 caliber semi-automatic assault rifle, which was also used during the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14.

SWAT members were called in to help stop Spengler, who battled with police before fatally killing himself.

"He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said, as reported by The Associated Press.

The blaze also led to the destruction of seven nearby homes in the neighborhood. After the incident, police found the note in Spengler's home but were unable to identify any motives from the few pages of the note.

When police further searched the burnt remains of the house they found the body of a woman believed to be the gunman's sister, Cheryl Spengler, 67, according to ABC News. Authorities are not sure if she was killed before or after the fire.

Spengler had previously been incarcerated for 18 years after being found guilty of murdering his 92-year old grandmother. His past conviction meant it was illegal for him to own any firearms, and authorities are currently investigating how he obtained the weapons for his Christmas Eve attack.

Two other firemen and an off-duty police officer were wounded in the incident but are expected to make full recoveries.
