Here's Andy Samberg's Hilarious Opening Emmy Song & Monologue
As with every year, this year's Emmys had many previous winners bringing home a statuette again, as well as some excellent new winners. Comedy stalwarts like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Allison Janney collected more trophies, but new winners and surprising victories were aplenty.
Here is our list of the five most shocking wins on Emmy night:
Which 'Dancing With the Stars' Pros Are Nominated For Emmys This Year?
Jon Hamm Wins Drama Lead Actor
Hamm had previously lost seven consecutive awards in his category, but he finally won an Emmy for playing ad man Don Draper in AMC's Mad Men. It looked like it was never going to happen for the popular actor, but the Television Academy gave him the victory in his last season of eligibility. While his speech was subdued and humble, his walk to the stage made the victory even better.
Regina King Wins Limited Series/Movie Supporting Actress
King was considered a longshot for her performance on ABC's American Crime. Many predicted either American Horror Story: Freak Show's Sarah Paulson or Bessie's Mo'Nique as more likely winners, but King pulled off the upset. As you can tell from the above video, King herself was surprised and overwhelmed by her win.
Peter Dinklage wins Drama Supporting Actor
While Dinklage already has an Emmy for playing Tyrion Lannister on HBO's Game of Thrones, his win this year was a huge shock for those who watch the show. Dinklage's role in season 5 was very limited compared to previous seasons, but it seems that his popularity combined with the show's notoriety pushed him over the top.
Inside Amy Schumer wins Variety Sketch Series
NBC's Saturday Night Live is a behemoth, going on for 40 years now, but Amy Schumer's sketch comedy show defeated it in the Emmys' first ever Variety Sketch Series category. Inside Amy Schumer really blew up this year so it may not come as too big of a shock, but it's certainly an impressive feat.
Veep wins Comedy Series
For the first time since 2010, we have a new winner in Best Comedy Series. With ABC's Modern Family hogging the award for the past five years, the Emmys finally decided to go in a different direction, awarding HBO's political satire Veep. Close Emmy watchers may have thought that no show would ever take down Modern Family, but here we are. It was a great night for Veep, with addition victories for Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale and the show's writers.
