Nancy Lee Grahn: Twitter Attacks 'General Hospital' Star Over Reaction On Viola Davis Emmy Win, Demanding She Deletes Social Media Account [PHOTO]
General Hospital star Nancy Lee Grahn has found herself in hot water after tweeting about Viola Davis' Emmy acceptance speech and claiming that the How To Get Away With Murder actress didn't know true discrimination.
Grahn took to Twitter after Davis' heartfelt acceptance speech where she discussed the lack of powerful and affecting roles for women of color in television, initially saying she thought Davis' HTGAWM boss, Shonda Rhimes, could have probably written a better speech for her.
I wish I loved #ViolaDavis Speech, but I thought she should have let @shondarhimes write it. #Emmys

However, after a fan tweeted back to her with a screenshot of Rhimes tweeting that she loved Davis' speech, Grahn proceeded to set off a firestorm by writing that Davis didn't actually know what it meant to be discriminated against because of her status as an actress overall.
@nxssy I do 2. I think she's the bees knees but she's elite of TV performers. Brilliant as she is. She has never been discriminated against — Nancy Lee Grahn (@NancyLeeGrahn) September 21, 2015
The comment set off a firestorm of critical tweets in Grahn's direction, from fellow celebs and general fans, as they criticized her for trying to take Davis' shining moment (she became the first African-American woman in history to win the Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series) away from her.
@NancyLeeGrahn Stop that right now. It is a venue for whatever the WINNER wants 2 say.It is her win. She is saying something that is proven

The backlash did cause Grahn to try and defend herself--
Viola Davis winning lead actress Emmy's historic. My upset is acting awards dont fix racial injustice. As an actor I see how irrelevant we r — Nancy Lee Grahn (@NancyLeeGrahn) September 21, 2015
I never mean to diminish her accomplishment. I wish I could get her roles. She is a goddess. I want equality 4 ALL women, not just actors.

I apologize 2 anyone who I offended. I'm women advocate since I became one. After reading responses, I hear u and my tweet was badly phrased — Nancy Lee Grahn (@NancyLeeGrahn) September 21, 2015
Schooled. As surrogate 2 last democratic presidents I thought I needed no lesson in equality. I was wrong. Please accept my apology.

I apologize for my earlier tweets and now realize I need to check my own privilege. My intention was not to (cont) https://t.co/uyre6WPeeH — Nancy Lee Grahn (@NancyLeeGrahn) September 21, 2015
30 yrs an advocate 4 human rights & now i'm a racist. Color me heartbroken. Twitter can bring out the best & sadly tonight the worst of us.

-but her comments continued to cause major criticism-and even calls for her delete her Twitter account-especially when her mistake in saying that Harriet Tubman was more worthy of honor because she dug tunnels (referring to the Underground Railroad) were also noticed:
.@NancyLeeGrahn, you are not the victim here. You are the offender. Get off Twitter & reflect on your intense racial bias. Grow from this. — deray mckesson (@deray) September 21, 2015
Harriet Tubman, Tunnel Digger. Thank you for this history lesson, @NancyLeeGrahn. Delete your account. https://t.co/Mq0GFcH9i6

I'm not shocked that @NancyLeeGrahn loved Arquette's speech & had a problem with Viola's. White feminism gets real upset when WOC speak. — Mikki Kendall (@Karnythia) September 21, 2015
Nancy Lee Grahn thinking the underground railroad was an actual railroad is why black history shouldn't be a 1 week unit in grade school.

Wait? Did Nancy Lee Grahn make her fuck up worse by comparing Harriet Tubman to a tunnel digger? She really didn't, didn't she? — Terrell J. Starr (@Russian_Starr) September 21, 2015
My goodness! So Nancy Lee Grahn DID compare Harriet Tubman to a tunnel digger. She needs to log off for a week.

I think @NancyLeeGrahn just found out that some thoughts should be kept off social media and remain unspoken words in your head — Sherri Shepherd (@SherriEShepherd) September 21, 2015
Sometimes we forget that social media isn't our personal diary. It's more like walking into an arena & shouting out our thoughts2 strangers
— Sherri Shepherd (@SherriEShepherd) September 21, 2015
And once you shout out your private thoughts to a roomful of strangers @NancyLeeGrahn you have those same people screaming it back at you — Sherri Shepherd (@SherriEShepherd) September 21, 2015
Remember when your mama use to say "everything in your head ain't suppose to come out your mouth"? Social media has disarmed that voice

140 characters to explain unintentional actions or thoughts is difficult... Everyone perceives something different @NancyLeeGrahn — Sherri Shepherd (@SherriEShepherd) September 21, 2015
Can you not? I'm a Disabled Autistic pansexual woman. Still not the time to shout down @violadavis https://t.co/QzKgscEbqZ

Let's talk about racism on Daytime @NancyLeeGrahn. Why is Tequan baking cakes on #GH while Bryan Craig is heading his own Emmy bait story? — KQ. (@kingquartermain) September 21, 2015
