William Shatner had a conversation on Twitter with astronaut Chris Hadfield, who is currently in space.

The 81-year-old "Star Trek" actor wrote to Canada's first space station commander using Twitter on Thursday.

"@Cmdr_Hadfield Are you tweeting from space? MBB," Shatner wrote, signing off with his abbreviation of "My Best, Bill."

Hadfield replied to Shatner while orbiting Earth in the International Space Station.

"@WilliamShatner Yes, Standard Orbit, Captain. And we're detecting signs of life on the surface," the astronaut wrote.

Officials with the Canadian Space Agency also used Twitter to confirm to Shatner that Hadfield was using the social media site to post updates.

"I'm very impressed!" Shatner tweeted.

Shatner was even invited for a visit to the CSA's headquarters, the John H. Chapman Space Center, in Saint-Hubert, Quebec.

"I can't make any promises but I will see what I can do. MBB," Shatner wrote.

Hadfield, a mechanical engineer and retired colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces, was launched into orbit in December by a Russian rocket. He is currently the flight engineer on the space station's six-man Expedition 34 crew. He will get a promotion in March that will put him in command of the International Space Station's 35th expedition. This will make him the first space commander from Canada, according to Yahoo News.

Astronauts onboard the station use Twitter to update their scientific activity in space along with demonstrating their own artistic creations.

Hadfield used the social media site to unveil the first original song recorded in space titled "Jewel in the Night" on Christmas Eve, according to Space.com.

The Canadian astronaut is expected to return from space in mid-May.

Shatner, a Canadian himself, is famous for his role as James T. Kirk and captain of the starship Enterprise in television and film.
