Kentucky Shooting Leaves 2 Dead; Police Investigating Cause of College Shooting, Child In Critical Condition
A gunman reportedly shot into a car, killing a man and woman, and wounding a 12-year-old girl on Tuesday in Hazard, Ky. The police have charged a 21-year-old with both attempted murder and murder for his involvement in the tragedy.
Police Chief of Hazard Minor Allen stated that Dalton Stidham was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. The crime took place in a college parking lot, which was secured for over an hour as police scoured two buildings at the Hazard Community and Technical College. Due to the heavy circumstances, the campus was closed on Wednesday.
Allen said that the horrific event resulted from a dispute between Stidham and Caitlin Cornett, 20, the woman that was murdered.
The police officer identified the male victim as Cornette's uncle, 53-year-old Jackie Cornett. The injured child was Jackie Cornett's daughter, who was in critical condition at noon on Wednesday at Kentucky Children's Hospital, Julie Phillips, a hospital spokesperson said to ABC News.
Allen stated that Caitlin, a college student, and Stidham had a 2-year-old son together and were meeting to exchange custody of the child. However, the police is still investigating what may have led to the shooting.
Caitlin's sister, Brittany Cornett, said that Stidham and Caitlin had separated in October after being together for three years, according to The Lexington Herald-Leader.
The child was not harmed during the deadly occurrence and is under the care of social services workers, Brittany said.
President of the college Stephen Greiner stated that roughly 30 students were on campus at the time of the killings. He also said that the staff of the institution reacted quickly to the shooting and secured campus buildings in order to minimize the impact.
"Our thoughts and sympathy are with the families of the victims of this tragedy," he said.
