Dog Runs Over Man to Death in Florida After Hitting Accelerator in Chevy Van, Details
A man was tragically killed when his dog stepped on the accelerator of his vehicle and ran him over.
James Campbell, who was 68 years of age, initially exited out of the vehicle to open metal gates at the end of his driveway when the accident occurred. As Campbell stood near the gates to move them, his boxer-bulldog jumped into the driver's seat and pressed his paw on the gas pedal.
The car reportedly jolted backwards and pinned Campbell underneath its wheels, according to Daily Mail. Iris Fortner, the 56-year-old partner of the late victim, attempted to stop the vehicle before it backed up onto Campbell.
She was sitting in the driver's seat but when she opened the vehicle's door to get a look at where Campbell was standing, police stated that the large boxer bulldog ran and jumped into the car and abruptly hit the accelerator, according to NBC News.
The 1995 Chevy van was said to be in its reverse gear and shot backwards before it collided with Campbell, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Escambia County Emergency Medical Services. Fortner hasn't been charged with any crime.
Officials of the Florida Highway Patrol said the accident happened outside the couple's residence in Cantonment, which is in Florida's Panhandle.
