A 9-year-old girl in New Lenox, Ill., is being called a hero for saving the life of her mother by stopping the speeding vehicle they were in from crashing.

Alex Sheridan spoke to NBC News about the scary incident that involved both herself and mother Jennifer, who went into diabetic shock while driving them home from a cousin's basketball game. During the ordeal, the mother was said to lose control of their car.

"At one point she went through a stop light and then at another point she was going over 70 miles per hour, and on the secondary road," Alex said.

Not able to recall the entire incident, Jennifer explained to the news site what she did remember about the dangerous situation. "I guess I went off the road and down through a little ditch and we were kind of heading towards trees and a sign and a utility pole."

In the midst of the ordeal, the youngster was able to turn the key in the ignition in order to bring the vehicle to a stop. The car was allegedly on path to strike a tree.

Prior to help arriving on the scene, Alex continued to hold onto her mother's car keys in order to prevent her from restarting the car.

When the child's father called to check on their whereabouts, the young girl informed her dad what had transpired and that they were lost. She then rapidly snapped a photograph of "Wood's Auto Body" and sent it to her father, who was able to figure out that they were on Laraway Road in Frankfort.

Fortunately, the mother and daughter are both okay. Jennifer will now be wearing a specially made insulin pump in order to prevent herself from facing a similar situation as well as going into shock again. She is thankful for her daughter's bravery and rapid thinking.

"She saved her mom, she saved herself, she's an amazing kid," Jennifer said.
