Amazon is making good on a promise from two years ago and is now readying a fleet of drones for its delivery service. The e-commerce giant uploaded a video on YouTube over Cyber Weekend demonstrating a new drone prototype. The Amazon electronic skybird is the future of same-day delivery and will serve as an aerial messenger delivering small packages to customers in less that 30 minutes.

As CNET reports, the "hybrid" drone that appears in the video is like the marriage of a helicopter and an airplane. Its vertical take-off is similar to a chopper; as it rises up to 400 feet in the air, it levels off towards its destination like an airplane.

The moderator for the Amazon Prime Air video is Jeremy Clarkson, former host of BBC show Top Gear. While the idea of an unmanned aircraft weighing less than 55 pounds delivering a package to your front door may seem far-fetched, we can expect this service in the not-so-distant future. The prototype drone can fly over 15 miles and travel at speeds of 55 mph, using a sensor to detect and avoid obstacles on the ground and up in the air.

First introduced to the world in December 2013 under to project name "Amazon Prime Air," the retailer's drone delivery service was designed to get orders out to customers faster. While recent reports show that e-commerce sales are on a steady rise, shoppers still long for the instant gratification that comes with walking into a store and getting an item on the spot. Amazon's fast delivery service will be a satisfying alternative to the traditional shopping experience, with shoe box size packages that arrive at your door the same way you'd order a pizza.

Amazon Prime Air is expected to materialize as soon as the FAA comes up with a plan to regulate a family of pilotless drones like Amazon's for commercial use. "Putting Prime Air into service will take some time, but we will deploy when we have the regulatory support needed to realize our vision," Amazon said in a statement.
