Microsoft customers looking to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro have a limited time before the best bargains end as today is the last day customers can purchase an upgrade for the discounted price of $39.99.

Starting tomorrow, Feb. 1, Microsoft will quintuple the price of the upgrade to $199.99. An upgrade to Windows 8, a less-capable edition that lacks corporate features such as BitLocker encryption and the ability to remotely connect to a company's network, will cost $119.99 beginning Friday.

Customers with PCs running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 can upgrade to Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, although with varying degrees of success. The migration from Windows 7 to Windows 8 is the most thorough, while that from XP is the least effective in bringing along existing files, settings and applications.

The $40 promo pricing ends on Feb. 1, but American students and faculty members can download an upgrade to Pro for $69.99, according to Mashable. A total of 49 other countries will also receive student discounts that take effect in a staggered rollout between February 21st and March 19th.

Microsoft also launched its new Office 2013 and Office 365 suites this week for non-business customers.

The main functional improvements in Office 2013 come through Microsoft's new Office 365 subscription service of a $100-a-year, according to CNET. Users will be able to install a version on up to five PCs, Macs or mobile devices by using the subscription service.

The new 365 essentially turns Office into an Internet-connected app, allowing you to save documents in cloud, collaborate with others, receive regular software updates, and use a remote version of Office from any computer if people are in need.

Customers will also have the ability to do a one-time standalone purchase of Office 2013 for $139.99 to $400.
