BlackBerry Q10 with Keyboard Release Delayed by Months in U.S.; Z10 Release Date Still March
Users in the U.S. looking to purchase the keyboard enabled BlackBerry Q10 will likely have to wait a few months until it is released after the touch-screen BlackBerry Z10 hits the market in March.
The Q10 is scheduled to be released in April around the world, but may be pushed back to a date in May or possibly June in the U.S. due to new device tests to be completed prior to putting them on the market.
Research in Motion Ltd. CEO Thorsten Heins conducted an interview on Monday with The Associated Press to explain that the exact release date will depend on each wireless provider and the individual testing processes.
The Z10 is still expected to reach retailers by mid-March, but Heins expressed his disappointment that the Q10 will possibly not be released for around eight to ten weeks after.
"We need to respect that. Am I a bit disappointed? Yeah, I would be lying saying no. But it is what it is, and we're working with all our carrier partners to speed it up as much as we can," Heins said.
So with the possible delay for the U.S. market will the Q10 be pushed back in other parts of the world?
BlackBerry spokesperson Amy McDowell confirmed to AllThingsD that the Q10 will still launch globally in April. She gave a statement that the company "will announce new pricing and availability information as carriers roll out around the world."
McDowell added that the company is doing what it can to try and speed up tests saying, "We are working closely with our carrier partners to accelerate their testing process, but cannot offer any specifics on U.S. availability."
The company unveiled both the Q10 and Z10 devices on Jan. 30 along with the announcement that they will run on BlackBerry 10 (BB 10).
The new Z10 comes with a 4.2-inch display with 356 pixels-per-inch (ppi), along with a textured backing that makes it comfortable to hold.
The Q10 comes with a fully-fledged mobile QWERTY-keyboard from a slightly smaller portrait display. It comes with a glass-weave cover, making it thinner and lighter, but also stronger than plastic.
Currently AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon have stated that they will carry both devices when they are finally released.
