9-Year-Old Gives Birth in Mexico; Police Search For Alleged Teen Father
Police said a 9-year-old girl gave birth in Western Mexico, and that they are searching for a 17-year-old boy who is the alleged father.
The young mother, whose name is Dafne, gave birth to a baby girl on Jan. 27 in a Jalisco hospital near Guadalajara, ABC News reported. The girl was given a C- Section at the time of the birth.
At a press conference Wednesday morning, Dr. Enrique Rabogo, director of Zoquipan Hospital, said, "the medical team decided a C-Section was the best option," adding "due to her own age and to the fact that he body was not ready to give birth."
While Rabago confirmed both baby and mother are fine at home, authorities are still in the hunt for the 17-year-old boy who is claimed to be the father of Daphne's baby. He may be charged with sexual abuse.
Jalisco state police spokesperson Lino Ginzalez Corona said Dafne's family alerted authorities after she gave birth and said the alleged teenage father has not been seen in the neighborhood since.
According to Corona, the young girl who got pregnant at the age of 8 claimed she and the boy were in a relationship, and didn't realize she was pregnant until the seventh month. Daphne described her relationship with the teenage boy as loving and was unwilling to give any more details.
"Due to her young age, we don't know if she is being entirely truthful," said Ginzalez.
Corona said the state prosecutor is "still open to the possibility of rape or child sex abuse."
Dafne is one of 11 children and lives in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, a neighborhood 25 miles south of Guadalajara.
"Her parents work all day and were not watching after her," Corona said. "and therefore didn't realize what was about to happen."
"We are looking for the young man to get his story because the girl does not understand what has happened," said Jorge Villasenor, another representative from the prosecutor's office. "This is either rape or child sex abuse."
