Three high school girls in Maine who were photographed giving a Nazi salute in their basketball uniforms have received disciplinary action.

The undated photo was sent to Greely High School administrators in Cumberland by an anonymous person who included it with a letter sent last week regarding anti-Semitic messages posted on social media sites such as Twitter.

The photograph depicts two standing members of the girls' basketball team that are facing each other with one arm raised in the Nazi greeting posture, while a third is seated, offering peace signs with her hands. The reported images were blurred as the girls are minors.

Some of the tweets reported in the letter were posted by WLBZ and allegedly refer to one of the girls on the team as "Hitler."

A tweet that was dated on Dec. 24 allegedly made fun of another teammate which stated, "So Jewish to have prac on Christmas Eve day."

Another message referred to the atrocious killings of Jews by the Nazi's using gas chambers to reference a person on the basketball team: "Another says "If ---- picked me up, she would've made me do sprints, then put me in a gas chamber."

A letter sent by the school principal Dan McKeone and the athletic director to parents on Monday which stated that "inappropriate and biased language used by members of the team" led to further unspecified disciplinary action, according to The Associated Press.

The administrators' message also stated that "whether done in ignorance or with hate" the behavior practiced by the girls was "simply unacceptable."

School superintendent Robert Hasson was quoted by UPI about his feelings over the girls' anti-Semitic gestures, "These are unacceptable behaviors at MSAD 51 [Maine School Administrative District No. 51], at Greely High School and for student athletes."

The school is working with the girls and social workers to try and remedy the situation.
