Nintendo announced that Pokémon Rumble U will appear as a downloadable game for the Wii U eShop starting in Japan this spring.

The news was reported first in the latest edition of Japan's CoroCoro Comics magazine, according to a report by IGN on Tuesday.

Rumble U, called Pokémon Scramble U in Japan, will be the third entry in the Pokémon Rumble series, and the first Pokémon title on Nintendo's newest platform.

The new game for the Wii U will feature all current Pokémon species that includes 649 creatures. Players will be able to see 100 Pokémon battle all at once on Rumble U, according to JoyStiq.

The Pokémon Rumble series previously appeared with a WiiWare title in 2009 and on the 3DS as Pokémon Rumble Blast in 2011, according to Polygon. The games are action-Role Playing Games (RPGs) that put players in direct control of various Pokémon.

The Rumble series eschews the primary Pokémon series' turn-based RPG gameplay, opting for dungeon crawling and real-time melee combat. Instead of capturing them, players could purchase Pokémon with coins in battle.

Players face off against dozens of enemy Pokémons at the same time, earning coins in the process that can be exchanged for new fighting moves for the creatures.

No official release date was set for Japan other than the spring 2013 announcement. Likewise there is no telling when the game will reach North America and Europe as Nintendo is focusing on the initial Japanese release.

Fans of the series are also eagerly waiting for the release of Pokémon X and Y that launches this autumn.

The Pokémon series has become a global sensation with several television series, movies, games and toys.

Nintendo has started to open up a huge archive of Pokémon anime episodes via a new iOS and Android app. Pokémon TV is now available on iTunes and Google Play with around 50 episodes from each generation of the show to watch.
