Teacher Suspended For Lassoing Student Around His Neck in Lesson Gone Wrong (Video)
A cattle-driving lesson in a Texas middle has left a 13-year-old student with bruises across his neck after a teacher tossed a lasso over his head on Monday.
A history instructor at Schrade Middle School, which is located in Rowlett, Tex. was showing lasso techniques to a seventh grade class.
According to Daily Mail, school officials state that the teacher had asked the class for volunteers, and then had the ones who participated run around the room as he tried to snag them with a rope.
However, the lesson didn't go as planned as the rope ended up catching one of the students by his neck instead of his body, leaving him with red burn marks, KHOU reported.
Garland Independent School District spokesperson Chris Moore stated that at the time of the incident, the teacher was telling the students about how cowboys would corral 'maverick steers' back in the herd.
The teacher reportedly had roping experience and knew he unintentionally missed his mark when the noose stopped at the student's shoulder, stated the Dallas Morning News.
Moore also said that the instructor's actions weren't intended to be malicious in nature, but acknowledged that he did show "extremely poor judgement."
The school district started an investigation into the roping incident and ended up suspending the teacher for precautionary reasons.
The victim was said to be recovering from the rope injuries at his home on Tuesday. Nonetheless, the 13-year-old's parents are shocked that something like that could happen while he was in school.
School officials stated that the teacher was indeed remorseful over the situation and agreed never to use a lasso for class again.
However, the Rowlett Police Department is still considering the possibility of filing criminal charges of injury to a child against the instructor in regards to the incident.
