Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 at an event on Wednesday that gave eager gamers a preview of what is to come.

The company announced the next-generation console but did not give an official look at the hardware of the PS4.

The only piece of hardware Sony showcased was the new DualShock 4 controller, according to USA Today. The new controller has a touchpad in the center that resembles the one on PlayStation Vita along with a Share button to upload photos and videos of gameplay.

Sony did not reveal a physical example of the next-generation console, but the company did reveal the PS4's specs.

The console will have x86 processor, a customized graphics processor and GDDR5 memory, according to ExtremeTech. The console will be capable of 170GPBS bandwidth and will include a Blu-ray/DVD drive, as well as USB 3.0, Ethernet and Bluetooth. There will also be a PS4 eye accessory that will have two cameras and four microphones and be capable of 1280 x 800 video at 60fps, 640 x 400 at 120fps and 320 x 192 at 240fps.

Sony also revealed a few of the games that will be released with the upcoming console, but there was no official look at the actual hardware.

One of the new games announced is Killzone: Shadow Fall which follows the events of its predecessor, according to CNET.

Typically the latest titles in the Killzone series have traditionally debuted alongside Sony's new products, according to Videogamer.

Killzone 2 was announced at E3 2005 along with the PS3. Killzone 3 did not come out with a new console but was featured with the new PlayStation Move and 3D support.

Sony also had some bad news for gamers with the announcement that the PS4 will not play games created for any of the three previous PlayStations, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. This means gamers will have to stream older games to the new console through the Internet.

The PlayStation 4 will reportedly hit the market in December for a release just in time for the holiday shopping season.
