Yoselyn Ortega: Nanny Who Murdered Krim Children Appears In Court (Video)
The nanny who stabbed two children to death in the bathtub of their Manhattan luxury apartment appeared in court Friday for the first time since the tragic murders.
According to a picture posted by Daily Mail, Yoselyn Ortega, 50, was wearing baggy grey sweats under prison uniform and had her hair in braided pigtails for the short hearing. Her hands were cuffed behind her back and the self-inflicted stab wound she gave herself during the incident could be seen on her throat.
Marina Krim had arrived to her Upper West Side apartment on October 25 last year to find her daughter Lucia, 6, and her son Leo, 2, in a pool of blood in the bathtub. She then reportedly witnessed the nanny stab herself.
According to the New York Post, the suspect was in court today for only two minutes when Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro expressed his impatience at the amount of overall time it's taking for Ortega to be psychologically evaluated.
Ortega, who now sports a thick scar on the front of her neck, listened to a Spanish interpreter.
"Six thousand pages have to be read," Ortega's public lawyer Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg said, in reference to the medical records the suspect has generated before the stabbings and during her four months behind bars in a prison ward at Elmhurst Hospital, where she currently resides.
"This might take a while," said the lawyer.
Ortega will be transported to a courthouse clinic for more evaluation on March 21, and is scheduled to be back in court April 15 for possible psychological exam results, the judge said.
Although this is the suspect's fifth court proceeding, it's the first time she's been pictured. Ortega kept her head down through a majority of it, except for one worried look at photographers, stated the news site.
Ortega, Lucia and Leo were supposed to meet Krim and daughter Nessie, 3, at a dance studio, but the mother became worried when they didn't show up, which is when she returned home to discover the tragedy.
