Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, said his first prayer in the Vatican Wednesday after being announced as the new pope.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, is the first pope elected from the Ameircas. He is a Jesuit from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Former Pope Benedict XVI ended his papacy in February, which lasted for eight years. He was the first pope in 598 years to resign, according to the New York Times. According to USA Today, Benedict didn't participate in the new election and cited health reasons.

The following is the transcript of Pope Francis' prayer:

Brothers and sisters, good evening.

You know that I must say to you that I came here as a bishop of Rome. My brothers, everybody came from all parts of the world.

I thank you for this greeting you give me. Thank you so much, but first of all and above all, I would like to declare a prayer for our beloved Benedict XVI. All together, we should pray for him. And I know that the Madonna will receive him.

Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of Thy wall, Jesus.

Holy Mother, Mother of God, pray for us. Now and at the hour of our death. Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Now, let's begin this long road from the Bishop of Rome to the people. Let us all behave with love and charity. Let us go along this road of fraternity and faith in ourselves. Let us pray always not just for ourselves but for others, for everyone in the world. Because there is a great brotherhood among us.

I wish for you that this road of the church that we're beginning today and with which my brother cardinals who are present here will help me with in this beautiful city.

Now, I would like to get the benediction, but first, I would like to ask a favor of you. Before I bless the people I hope that you will bless me. The benediction of the people toward the Bishop of Rome.

So in silence now, let's do this prayer for me.

Benediction:

And now, my benediction to you, and the whole world. To all the men and women of good will.

May the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, in whose power and authority we have confidence. Intercede in our behalf to the Lord.

Through the prayers and merits of the blessed Mary ever virgin, of blessed Michael the Archangel, of blessed John the Baptist, and of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints.

May almighty God have mercy on you. And with all of your sins forgiven, may Jesus Christ lead you into everlasting life, indulgence, absolution, and vermission of all of your sins. Time for a true and fruitful penance and always repent in heart and amending of life. Grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit. And final perseverance in good works, may the almighty and merciful Lord grant you all of this.

And may the blessing of almighty God and of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit descend upon you and remain with you always.

Thank you so much, I leave you know. And thank you so much for the greeting, please pray for me. And we'll see you soon. I'm going to go pray to the Madonna tomorrow. And so I'm going to say to all Romans, good night and have a good sleep.
