A teenage racecar driver taking warm-up laps at a raceway in California on March 16 veered off track and into a pit row, killing a 14-year-old boy and a 68-year-old man in the process, according to officials.

Six or seven vehicles were on the racetrack when one driver lost control of his car and struck the two victims, Yuba County Sheriff's Capt. Ron Johnson said. On Sunday afternoon, the Yuba County Sheriff's office identified the victims as racecar owner Dale Wondergem Jr., 68, and the driver's cousin, 14-year-old Marcus Johnson.

Officials said the late Johnson was related to Chase Johnson, the 17-year-old driver of the racecar who wasn't injured during the collision.

The Yuba County Sheriff's office said that Wondergem Jr., who is from Grass Valley, and Marcus of Santa Rosa were pronounced dead shortly after being hit in the pit area at the Marysville Raceway Park at roughly 6 p.m. on Saturday.

While Wondergem was pronounced dead at the scene, Marcus was said to be declared dead either inside the ambulance or at the hospital, according to NBC. Wondergem owned a racecar at the track but not the one that was involved with the crash.

The track where the incident took place is located about 40 miles north of Sacramento. The raceway was hosting the California Sprint Car Civil War Series on the opening day of its season.

"There must have been a mechanical problem. The car didn't slow down," said Steven Blakesley, the announcer calling the race from within the stands.

Blakesley said the sprint cars were doing what's referred to as "hot laps" about an hour prior to the race when the car driven by Chase was going 90 mph and he couldn't orchestrate a turn.
