Florida Residence Hall Closed, Explosive Devices Found After Apparent Suicide, VIDEO
Hundreds of students in a residence hall at the University of Central Florida were evacuated early Monday morning after authorities discovered explosive devices and weapons in a dorm room.
Authorities are investigating an apparent suicide after finding a man in a Tower 1 dorm with explosives and what looked to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to The Associated Press. Spokeswoman Kim Wilmath for State University System Chancellor Frank Brogan said, "As far as we know no other students are in danger."
Police were called to the dorm on Orlando, Fla., after a fire alarm went off and about 500 students were evacuated, though the school reportedly said there was no immediate threat. On their way to the scene at the school, a 911 call came in about a man with a gun. UCF spokesman Grant Heston said police found an assault weapon, a handgun and explosive devices in the room where the man died.
He also said the FBI and Orange County Sheriff's Office are working together on the investigation, and that the sheriff's bomb squad examined the explosive devices.
It hasn't yet been reported whether or not the man who died was a student. The university canceled classes through noon on Monday as a precaution.
