This is a very important day for the 2016 presidential election, with prominent states like Florida and Ohio voting in their primaries.

Five states vote today on both the Democratic and Republican sides: Florida, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is hoping to extend her delegate lead with wins in Florida and North Carolina, while Bernie Sanders needs big upsets in Illinois, Missouri and Ohio.

As for the Republicans, it's an important day for all four remaining candidates. Donald Trump currently stands as the frontrunner and could very well sweep all five states, cementing himself as the most likely nominee. However, two other candidates have "home field advantage" - Marco Rubio in Florida and John Kasich in Ohio. Kasich is polling ahead in some Ohio polls, while Rubio is polling below Trump in all of this month's Florida polls.

If Kasich and/or Rubio do not win their home states, it's pretty likely that neither will have a strong path to the nomination. It remains to be seen if either would drop out after this.

Ted Cruz probably has the least to lose on this Primary Day. He does not have the pressure of being the presumptive frontrunner, nor is he feeling the heat to drop out. But if Trump wins by big margins, it may be time for Cruz to start stepping it up in the following weeks.

Results for the primaries will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET, when the polls in North Carolina and Ohio close. CNN, Fox News and MSNBC will all be devoting major coverage to the results, so tuning in around this time is best.

Polls close in Florida, Illinois and Missouri at 8 p.m. ET, so you should start hearing results from those at that time.
