Suffolk County authorities seized an excess of 300 guns and a large amount of ammunition from a home in Long Island, N.Y., nearby Centereach High School, officials revealed Thursday.

Jay Steiner, 66, was arrested last week and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and for illegal possession of more than 10 operable firearms. The homeowner was said to have ran an illegal gun business.

Prosecutors made the announcement regarding the case on Thursday after investigators completed testing on over several dozen of the illegal handguns found at his Centereach residence.

"Most of the guns recovered from this defendant's home were not under lock and key. We found them scattered among various rooms in the house and in an unlocked attic," said Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.

When the district attorney's Gun Suppression Team used a search warrant to enter Steiner's premises, they found five loaded handguns in an unlocked dresser drawer, a loaded shotgun hanging on the wall, a revolver under a hat inside the kitchen area, seven handguns inside a briefcase and 67 handguns in two basement safes, according to Spota.

Investigators also discovered two devices called "drop-in auto sears," which are small pieces of metal used to convert an AR-15 rifle into a fully automatic machine gun.

Steiner is currently out of jail on bail. He is due back in a courtroom on April 29.
