New Pepsi Bottle with Improved Design Has Better Grip, Photo and Video
Pepsi announced Friday changes to its 16-ounce and 20-ounce bottles for the first time in almost 20 years, switching to a swirl design that supposedly offers a better grip.
The new bottle will also feature a shorter label that will wrap around the bottle and has a "cola-colored" border. The Pepsi logo has been enlarged on the shorter label. See a photo of the new bottle here.
Pepsi attempted to market itself as the hip alternative to Coca-Cola. While Coca-Cola has undergone minimal changes to its appearance and maintained its cursive logo, Pepsi completely revamped its logo three years ago to the globe style featured on the new bottles. Mauro Porcini, the former chief design officer at a multinational conglomerate called 3M and member of Forbes' 40 Under 40 List in 2012, was behind the new design.
Angelique Krembs, Pepsi's vice president of marketing, said, "We didn't want to create a shape that came out of nowhere. It's not uniform, it's a little asymmetrical, there's a little edginess and playfulness, which is consistent with Pepsi's equities and youthful spirit."
The new bottles will hit stores in April, according to adage.com, and Krembs said she expects half the country to be converted to the new style by the end of the year. Krembs also said she expects 16-ounce bottle sales to receive a boost due to the new packaging.
The new bottles have been adopted as an effort to drum up interest in Pepsi, which saw its consumption drop by 4 percent in the past year, according to The Associated Press. Pepsi has also signed singer Beyonce Knowles to a $50 million deal to market the product. The deal allows Pepsi to use her image on limited edition Pepsi cans. Pepsi sponsored her Super Bowl XLVII performance.
