The Samsung Sprint Epic 4G Touch may be old news when compared to the fervor surrounding the release of the Galaxy S4, which is mere weeks away, but the wireless provider's not forgotten about the phone's forefathers and the Epic 4G Touch will receive a much-needed Jelly Bean upgrade starting today.

According to a memo leaked to several outlets, the Epic 4G Touch is slated to make the leap to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean beginning today when the new software will be rolled out to Sprint users.

The GB27 update zip file will not be available over the air and reports show the file will be sent directly by Samsung and will require customers to access an external website which has not yet gone live.

To complete the update, Epic 4G Touch users must have access to a desktop or laptop computer which runs Windows 7, Vista or XP, meaning OS X and Windows 8 users will have to head to their nearest Sprint retail store in order to get the GB27 update.

To verify the software version of the device, Epic 4G Touch users can head to their home screen, tap "menu" and then "settings" and then "about phone". The software version is displayed under "build number" and should read GB27.

The device was originally released as the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch to Sprint customers on September 16, 2011. The key differences between the Sprint release and the international version revolved around Sprint's 2500 MHz WiMax radio as well as the fact that its 4.52 inch display was larger than that of the international version.

The phone features four touch-capacitive buttons as opposed to the three-button hardware/capacitive combination found on the international version in addition to a larger, long lasting 6.66 Wh battery. The Sprint variant, however, was not equipped with NFC capability

The Sprint variant does not come equipped with NFC capability, unlike the variants offered by T-Mobile USA and AT&T Mobility.
