Was Today show host Matt Lauer flipped off by his co-host Savannah Guthrie during Friday's live broadcast of the daily morning news show?

Footage from the show features Guthrie walking away from a vacuum cleaner demonstration and jokingly raising her hand, with one of her fingers directed toward at Lauer after he made a crack about Guthrie's vacuuming skills.

During the vacuum cleaner segment, Guthrie appeared to believe she was off camera when she threw the one-finger salute in Lauer's direction. The question was whether she flashed her index or middle finger because she was wearing black gloves.

Sensing another Today show controversy could hit the news, Guthrie immediately took to Twitter to deny she had flipped her co-host the bird.

"Folks!! That was my INDEX finger! Photo evidence proving my innocence coming! #fingergate #TGIF," Guthrie tweeted.

She then posted a screenshot of herself with her left hand raised. It's difficult to make out which finger she's throwing Lauer's way but she tweeted, "Okay here's our screen grab for all you doubters!!"

Jokingly Lauer then took to Twitter and posted a picture of himself "storming out" of the NBC office to mock the supposed middle finger salute.

The show has been rife with controversy after Lauer finally broke his 8-month silence regarding the unexpected firing of his last co-host Ann Curry. Lauer told the Daily Beast that the time period leading up to and following Curry's departure "was a hard time for everybody" and brought negative attention to the show.

"We were getting kicked around a lot," Lauer told the online news outlet. "Some of it was self-inflicted and perhaps deserved."

During a tearful farewell in June of 2012, Curry revealed she would be leaving the Today show after spending 15 years as an on-air personality and later as Lauer's co-host.

"For all of you that saw me as a groundbreaker, I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line - but man I did try," she told viewers during the show.

Curry declined an embrace from Lauer and many viewers ended up placing the blame for Curry's unexpected ousting at Lauer's feet.

His future at the show remains under a cloud of uncertainty and on Tuesday former Today intern Mark Zinni criticized Lauer on Twitter, calling him "not so nice."
