Navy SEAL Accident In Arizona Leaves One Dead Following Mid-Air Collision During Parachute Exercise
One of the two Navy SEALS who was injured during a parachute training exercise in Arizona has succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead on Friday, according to an AP report.
The second SEAL was injured during the exercise as well and is still hospitalized, authorities said.
The area command utilizes a parachute testing and training facility at the Pinal Airpark in Marana, according to military officials who said that the parachute training programs run year-round.
The area, in South Arizona, where the parachute exercise occurred was amidst rugged desert terrain east of Tucson.
Pinal County Sheriff's officials said that the injured Navy men collided while free-falling in mid-air.
Kenneth McGraw, a U.S. Special Operations Command spokesman, said the two men were practicing "routine military free-fall training" at the time the accident occurred just after noon MST., according the AP report.
The SEALS landed in different areas but Department of Defense officials said one of the SEALS, an E-8 Senior Chief, was pronounced dead after he was taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center.
The surviving Naval officer , an E-6 Petty First Class, was said to be in stable condition at the same university medical center, according to DoD officials.
The identities of the two SEALs, both of whom are members of an East Coast Naval Special Warfare Unit, were not released because, according to military officials, the accident is under investigation.
Navy SEALS have been in the news in recent years after one of the special service members was credited as the individual who took out terrorist Osama bin Laden. In the wake of the mission's success several books and even movies were made.
Most recently, Kathryn Bigelow directed Zero Dark Thirty, a documentary style film which chronicles the investigation which led to the location of bin Laden at a Pakistani compound and culminated with a minute-for-minute reenactment of the fateful night on May 2, 2011 when the SEAL team shot and killed the terrorist.
