For the second time in just a few short months, Maxie (Kirsten Storms) is worried that Nathan's (Ryan Paevey) life could be in danger, and as she frets that the man she loves may not survive his recent accident, she could bond with someone unexpected on General Hospital.

The two became engaged after he survived getting shot at Julian (William DeVry) and Alexis's (Nancy Lee Grahn) wedding, and despite their issues stemming from Maxie's suspicions about what really happened with his first wife, Claudette, things were moving ahead with the pair planning their nuptials. However, after Nathan was asked to take care of the transport to get Carlo (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) to a new prison, the mission went wrong when Carlos was able to escape because of Paul (Richard Burgi), stabbing Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), killing the driver of the transport vehicle, and then bashing Nathan's head in with a rock and fracturing his skull.

Now, Nathan is in surgery, and all Maxie can do is wait for word on his condition. And as she does, she could start finding herself sharing an unexpected bond with Nathan's mother, Leisl (Kathleen Gati), despite the fact that she's always been difficult to get along with in the past, and helped Britt cover up the fact that she was keeping Dante and Lulu's (Emme Rylan) son for a year and passing him off as her own.

However, no matter how much the two women bond while they wait, nothing will matter more to either of them when Griffin (Matt Cohen) finally emerges from the operating room to let them know what happened.

"Is Nathan okay? Did he make it?" Maxie asks desperately in a preview clip for the Thursday, May 12 episode.

Griffin will likely be able to share that Nathan did make it through surgery, though he could caution that his condition doesn't entirely clear him and keep him out of the woods just yet. Then, he may have to answer more questions, as Maxie could begin to wonder what he meant when he told her before going into surgery that he "owed" Nathan his life.

General Hospital airs Monday-Friday at 3 p.m. on ABC.
